Neuerburg, nestled in the narrow Enz Valley and surrounded by slate cliffs, is the perfect setting for a climbing adventure. The Neuerburg via ferrata takes a unique approach: The approximately 4.5-kilometer loop route utilizes the existing hiking trail infrastructure and connects sections of the premium “Neuer-Burg-Weg” trail and a local hiking trail with climbing sections at six selected rock faces, offering spectacular views of the town. What makes it special: These sections can also be bypassed, so the concept appeals to both classic hikers and climbing enthusiasts, who can explore the route together. It is therefore also suitable for families with children.
The starting and ending point of the via ferrata is the newly redesigned market square. Climbing sections run past the large Neuerburg coat of arms, the Enz waterfalls with their historic mills, and, of course, the castle.
Climbing equipment rental: Climbing equipment can be rented at the Infopoint Marktplatz 3 in Neuerburg. Click here for online reservations. The equipment is suitable for people weighing 40–120 kg. The minimum height for using the via ferrata is 1.40 m (arm reach of at least 1.60 m) to ensure you can reach the footholds and handholds properly.
"The view is breathtaking. The absolute highlight is climbing up next to the Neuerburg coat of arms and seeing the entire town center from up there. It really is something very special."
The via ferrata is open to the public, but you must use professional climbing gear (helmet, harness, via ferrata set) to climb it!
Climbing equipment will be available for rent starting March 29, 2026, at the Tourist Information Center at Marktplatz No. 3 in Neuerburg. Click here for online reservations.
To tackle the via ferrata, you should be in good physical condition, sure-footed, and not prone to vertigo. To reach the footholds and handholds easily, you should be at least 1.40 m tall and have an arm reach of at least 1.60 m.
When wet, there is an increased risk of slipping on the rocks. Rockfall is possible.
It’s best to always climb with another person.
Important: Use of the via ferrata is at your own risk!
The via ferrata has six different sections with varying difficulty levels ranging from A/B to D/E; some sections offer both easier and more difficult routes (see topo).
Overall, the via ferrata is also suitable for beginners who meet the physical requirements—good fitness, no fear of heights, sure-footedness, and a minimum height of 1.40 m.
We recommend that climbing novices skip the challenging first climbing section at the Beilsturm for now and save it for the end of the climb.
The Neuerburg via ferrata consists of six climbing sections connected by hiking trails. Depending on your experience and fitness level, the entire route takes about 3–4 hours to complete.

Yes, you can. The trail alternates between climbing sections and hiking sections, and each climbing section can be bypassed. This means you can still go on the hike with your whole family or friends, even if only some of you want to or are able to climb.
Normal physical fitness is sufficient for the hiking sections. Between “Ritterstieg” and “Pestfriedhof,” the trail gets a bit steeper as it goes up and down.
You should definitely wear good hiking boots; hiking poles are also helpful.
No, the via ferrata loop trail is not suitable for strollers due to its steep ascents and descents and stairs. Please carry babies and toddlers in a baby carrier!
If you plan to hike the via ferrata, you should use a parking lot with no time limit. You can find suitable parking lots on the map.
